How running pace is calculated

Pace is simply time divided by distance. Run 10 km in 50 minutes and your pace is 5:00 per kilometre. Run 6.21 miles in the same 50 minutes and that is 8:03 per mile — the same effort, expressed in different units.

Because pace is a rate, it scales cleanly: once you know your pace you can multiply by any distance to estimate a finish time, or divide a target time by a distance to find the pace you need to hold.

Pace vs. speed

Pace (minutes per unit of distance) and speed (distance per hour) are two views of the same number. Runners usually think in pace because it maps directly to the watch face during a session; cyclists and treadmills tend to show speed. This tool shows both so you can set a treadmill to the right km/h or mph for your goal pace.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

It depends entirely on the runner and the distance. A comfortable easy pace for many recreational runners sits around 6:00–7:00 per km (about 9:40–11:15 per mile). The only pace that matters is one you can sustain for your goal distance.

How do I convert pace per mile to pace per km?

Multiply your per-mile pace by 0.621 to get per-km, or divide per-km by 0.621 to get per-mile. This calculator shows both at once so you never have to do the maths.
